South of the River
Pengyuan Hu
I thought about my attachment to laowu, to the pond at the front and the winding village paths leading to the old house. I thought about the many dreams of mine about the white tiles, the staircases, the trees and shrubberies and the green pond. The answer to the question my professor asked me has always been the relationship I have been trying to define between me and my hometown for all these years, regardless of how superficially obvious that relationship might look like. This thesis is a way for me to honor my family, especially my aunt who worked so arduously to become the doctor she wanted to be, and my grandfather whose many talents make writing prescription as an epic poem seem easy. |
